Last week in Mayfield, KY the Blackbirds own Robert … hit the flat track on a Harley, holding his own against a class of modern 450s. Will Fulford recaps:
“Robert held his own in the opening laps and was a crowd favorite… Unfortunately, on lap 3 of his heat race, his top triple vibrated loose and the steering stem separated from the frame, causing Robert to lowside into turn 3. We sprinted to the crash, but Robert was already picking the bike up. A few dings and a flat rear tire, but no major damage.
As Robert, his dad, Draper & I pushed the broken Harley down the front straight in front of the grandstands, the crowd clapped & cheered. Robert went back out on his KTM & was immediately twice as fast.
After the race we all walked over to the fair rides, tired & dusty. The carnies were close to shutting down their rides & we had no tickets anyway. We asked if we could ride for cash & the carnies looked up and said, "Were you that guy riding the Harley?” Robert nodded. “Well y'all jump on… no charge.”
…We all went back to our childhoods for a few minutes on a carousel in Mayfield, Kentucky. I looked back as my plastic pony rose, gently up & down, and we all had smiles on our faces half a mile wide… riding together… Blackbirds.“
