This week’s Local Love goes out to our boy Taylor Pyburn. When he’s not off adventuring, Taylor balances builds while simultaneously keeping Atlas running smoothly behind the scenes. Two years ago, Taylor & two friends hit the road on their bikes for a 6 week adventure from coast to coast.
In T’s word’s:
“It all started with a few beers, as most great ideas do. We would buy motorcycles after graduation and take off on a trail we knew nothing about, connecting two coasts.
The Trans America Trail, or TAT is a 4,500 mile off road expedition from Eastern Tennessee to the Oregon Coast using forest service, fire service and any dirt roads imaginable. While I would suggest a little more caution, a lot more training and preparation - sometimes the best course is a crash course, and that’s exactly what we got.
Our idea grew as we began to map out our route. Leaving out of Washington D.C, we would have to use part of the Trans Eastern Trail, or TET, a north-south path which we discovered from our friends on ADVRider. To connect the TET to the TAT, the obvious choice was the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Tail of the Dragon, or Deals Gap. That would send us directly to the trail head in Tellico Plains, TN.
What would follow would take us across 14 states, last over 43 days and take us over 8,000 miles. There would be multiple close calls, a couple nasty wrecks, one head on collision with a deer, & one top end rebuild. It would also set me on a year on the road.”
