This was a fun project. A couple months ago, Brad asked us to build hima bike on a budget.
He wanted a solid BMW airhead donor as a platform & after searching around, we found a local 1986 BMW R80RT monoshock from our friend Blake Smith over at Nashville Motorcycle Collective.
This build was a bit of a challenge for us. Among other things, we were working with a newer wiring harness, while also wanting to showcase potential aftermarket parts to offer to other BMW Airhead owners who might be looking to customize their own bikes at the DIY level. Since the frames are very universal through the Airhead R series, this seemed like a good candidate to see what we could do. Everything we made was kept basic & bolts right on to the stock mounting positions.
First, we started with fabricating a new subframe with one inch tubing to give the bike a more uniform look and better lines, especially for the monoshock model. Next was a custom aluminum battery box tailored for a light weight Shorai lithium battery & from here we had a custom seat to finish the look. Another addition created to set it aside from the rest while keeping on a budget is the single sided stainless steel dual exhaust which mounts directly to the stock headers. The tank color was matched to the M Powersports anniversary emblem color.
